The German 5-zone tax formula (§ 32a EStG)

Unlike the UK or US which use discrete brackets, Germany uses a continuous polynomial that smoothly raises the marginal rate from 14% at the tax-free allowance (€12,084) up to 42% at €68,481 (Zone 3 entry), then holds flat until the "Reichensteuer" kicks in at €277,826 (45%). This avoids bracket-edge distortions.

Germany salary FAQ

How does German income tax (Einkommensteuer) work?
Germany uses a continuous 5-zone polynomial formula (§ 32a EStG), not flat brackets. The marginal rate rises smoothly from 14% at €12,084 (Grundfreibetrag) to 42% at €68,481, then 45% above €277,826. We implement the exact BMF formula for accuracy.
What is Solidaritätszuschlag in 2026?
Soli is a 5.5% surcharge on your Einkommensteuer — but since 2021 it only applies to higher earners. For 2026, it kicks in when annual Einkommensteuer exceeds ~€18,130 (single), which corresponds to roughly €73,000 gross salary. Below that: 0.
Do I have to pay church tax (Kirchensteuer)?
Only if you are registered with a tax-collecting religious community (Catholic, Protestant, Jewish). Rate is 9% of Einkommensteuer (8% in Bayern and Baden-Württemberg). Toggle it off in the calculator if you are konfessionslos (no religion).
What social contributions come out of my gross?
Four employee contributions: Rentenversicherung 9.3% (pension, cap €96,600 West / €89,400 East), Krankenversicherung ~8.55% (health + Zusatzbeitrag, cap €66,150), Pflegeversicherung 1.8% or 2.3% childless (care, same cap as health), Arbeitslosenversicherung 1.3% (unemployment, cap €96,600). Total: roughly 20-21% of gross.
What is my tax class (Steuerklasse)?
Class I = single; II = single parent; III/V = married couple (one high earner + one low); IV = married equal earners; VI = second job. Class III gives the highest monthly net if your spouse is class V. The calculator assumes Class I by default; for joint filing use a Lohnsteuerrechner with both spouses.
