Estimates, not official figures
Our tax calculators apply publicly published rates and standard withholding assumptions. They do not:
- Account for every federal, state, provincial, or local tax credit or deduction you may qualify for.
- Handle multi-state, multi-province, or nonresident situations.
- Include city, county, or municipal income taxes unless explicitly noted on the page.
- Model variable or irregular income, stock option exercises, retirement account withdrawals, capital gains, self-employment income beyond W-2 equivalents, or gig-economy complexities.
- Replace the calculations done by your employer's payroll system or the withholding figure on your pay stub — which may differ slightly due to employer-specific rules, mid-year changes, or rounding.
Your actual tax liability depends on your complete financial situation and is determined when you file your annual return.
Source authorities
We use tax rates and thresholds published by:
- United States: Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Social Security Administration (SSA), and each state's Department of Revenue (linked on state pages).
- United Kingdom: HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and the Scottish Government.
- Canada: Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and provincial/territorial revenue authorities.
- Australia: Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
When in doubt, verify figures against the official source linked on each calculator page.
Consult a professional
For personalized tax planning, return preparation, audit representation, or financial planning, consult a licensed professional — a Certified Public Accountant (US), Chartered Accountant (UK), Certified Tax Professional (Canada), Registered Tax Agent (Australia), or an equivalent qualified advisor in your jurisdiction.
